Springfield Primary School

Physical Education (PE)

 Intent:

  • Establish fundamental movement skills and ball skills in the early years to provide the foundations for more complex physical activities.
  • Teach learners the rules, strategies and decision-making processes required across various disciplines.
  • Foster habits and confidence that support healthy, active lifestyles long after learners leave our school, aligning with our broader school ethos.
  • Provide a broad, balanced and inclusive experience that allows all learners to succeed regardless of their starting point.

Implementation:

  • The National Curriculum for art and design is taught to all year groups; We follow Get Set 4 PE Primary scheme of learning.
  • A clear progression in knowledge, skills and vocabulary is taught throughout the school to ensure coverage is met; the sequence builds on skills and progression is clear throughout.
  • Sequencing of units and lessons allows for learners to connect previously taught knowledge from across the curriculum to new learning in order to help make connections and understand new learning.
  • Retrieval lessons and starters are used to activate previously taught knowledge in order to consolidate prior learning and make synoptic links between topics; they are also used as an assessment strategy.
  • Key vocabulary is shared and discussed at the start of each unit and then revisited in future lessons.
  • Teachers assess and adapt learning for all groups of learners, specifically providing support and challenge for learners with SEND and those who are Disadvantaged.
  • Learning Questions stimulate learners' curiosity and independence.
  • All learners have the opportunity to participate in a  range of extra-curricular sports after school.
  • Investing in the School Sports Partnership to allow all learners to participate in competitions with local schools.
  • Opportunities are planned for sporting professionals to visit the learners and inspire them by sharing their achievements.

Impact:

  • Springfield sportspeople have the skills and knowledge to succeed in a range of activities.
  • Springfield sportspeople understand how to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • Springfield sportspeople show respect and positive sporting behaviour, celebrating both their own achievements and the successes of others.
  • Springfield sportspeople are prepared for future sporting opportunities at secondary school and beyond.
