Springfield Primary School

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

Intent:

  • Leverage cross-curricular links to embed language learning into the broader educational experience.
  • Position language as a fundamental tool for exploring individual identity and building community.
  • Use language acquisition to reshape learners’ worldviews and deepen their understanding of their own language.
  • Prioritise early and diverse linguistic exposure to foster a lifelong foundation for communication.

Implementation:

  • A clear progression of skills and knowledge is followed using the Twinkl scheme of work to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum. Our chosen language is Spanish.
  • Sequencing lessons allows learners to connect previously taught knowledge from across the curriculum to new learning in order to help them make connections and understand new learning.
  • Retrieval starters are used to activate previously taught knowledge in order to consolidate prior learning and make synoptic links between topics; it is also used as an assessment strategy.
  • Teachers assess and adapt learning for all groups of learners, specifically providing support and challenge for learners with SEND and those who are Disadvantaged.
  • Learning Questions stimulate learners' curiosity and independence.
  • Cross-curricular links are made to wider parts of the curriculum when they naturally fit but this is never forced to ensure deep levels of modern foreign languages knowledge and skills are always prioritised.
  • Action songs and rhymes are used to develop phonetic skills, memory skills and further vocabulary.
  • Learners are given the opportunity to look at other languages.
  • In EYFS and KS1, learners are introduced to modern foreign languages through an immersive day: Pasaporte al Mundo Hispano! (Passport to the Hispanic World!).

Impact:

  • Springfield linguists apply core language-learning strategies across a diverse range of languages.
  • Springfield linguists identify and compare the distinct grammatical and syntactical frameworks of different languages.
  • Springfield linguists build language proficiency through the integrated development of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • Springfield linguists deepen and provide meaning to linguistic study through cultural context.
  • Springfield linguists’ language learning serves as a catalyst for enhanced oracy and  literacy, and a sophisticated understanding of global and local identities.
